Beyond the Stress of Success - Access Your Thriving Zone
September 13, 2007
Genuine enthusiasm…real feeling of accomplishment…sense of satisfaction and fun. Welcome to your thriving zone!
How do you gain quick access? Simple…take 3 easy steps.
Pause to Refresh…Given the relentless demands of nonstop 24/7 lifestyles, it is easy to forget we are human beings, not human doings. Yet performance experts agree. Constant doing without real downtime impairs our ability to perform at our best. And this also keeps us from being in our thriving zone.
Need proven and manageable ways to incorporate regular pause-to-refresh intervals in your work day? Try these:
- Pause every hour and a half to consciously recover from the physical, mental and emotional pressures of work.
- Get up from your desk for a few minutes. Take several deep breaths. Stretch. Take a short walk around the office or inside the building.
- Leave the building to breath some fresh air. While outside, gaze up at the sky, pay attention to a tree or a plant. Staring off into the distance without any particular focus actually relaxes the brain and the body.
Paradigms are Containers for Change

Paradigms are Containers for Change
by: Jeanie Marshall
Paradigms are ubiquitous. They show up in conversations, books, bedrooms, films, families, restaurants, professions, games, sports, industries, and social systems of all types. Paradigms fall within paradigms, overlap other paradigms, and bump into still others. Paradigms are big or small, new or old, comfortable or uncomfortable, familiar or unfamiliar, long-term or short-lived. Paradigms are ever-changing.
Paradigm Defined
My understanding and appreciation of paradigms have been greatly enhanced by Joel Barker’s book, Future Edge. Even though this book is out of print, it as a powerful contribution to the business world, in my view. Barker defines a paradigm as “a set of rules and regulations (written or unwritten) that does two things: (1) it establishes or defines boundaries; and (2) it tells you how to behave inside the boundaries in order to be successful.” A paradigm shift occurs when a change in the mind-set occurs. New paradigms develop when old (or current) paradigms no longer work. (Barker, Joel Arthur. Future Edge: Discovering the New Paradigms of Success. New York: William Morrow and Company, Inc., 1992).

Can Eating Certain Foods Help You to Lose Weight?
September 12, 2007
The best way to lose weight is by consuming fewer calories than you expend or conversely, by expending more calories than you consume.
Experts have discovered that certain foods can actually help you to lose weight without the stress of dieting or exercise. The down side is that many of us have a tendency to dress these foods up with cheese, sour cream, butter or other calorie-laden flavor enhancers. This causes the weight loss effect to be lost. It may be difficult to not add extra calories to these foods but with a strong will power it can be done.
A negative calorie food can be defined as a food that results in a slimming effect for the body. In other words a carrot (without anything else) will cause your body to use an increased amount of energy when digesting it and other foods, this can lead to an overall reducing effect on the body. This is partly from the amount of energy it takes to digest the carrot or other negative calorie food and partly from the elevation in metabolism that these foods naturally create. The overall effect is a net loss of energy, which is measured in calories. It should be understood that ‘negative calorie’ doesn’t mean that the food has zero calories in it, nor does it have an anti-calorie or a negative calorie.
Know Your Bodybuilding Supplement - BCAAs
September 11, 2007
BCAA stands for branched chain amino acids and is increasingly being recognized as an important supplement in the field of sports nutrition. In short the term refers to three essential amino acids - leucine, isoleucine and valine.
Amino acids are widely known as the building blocks of protein. When protein food is eaten it gets digested into individual amino acids and short chains of amino acids that are sufficiently small to be absorbed into the bloodstream. They are then used by the body to build and repair tissues amongst other things.
Amino acids are split between those classed as essential and those labelled non-essential. This simply means that essential amino acids cannot be made by the body, whereas non-essential amino acids can. There are nine essential amino acids and each must be obtained from the diet. The nine essential amino acids are histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine.
Non-essential amino acids are just as important as the essential variety and the term simply means they can be made by the body from vitamins and other amino acids. The non-essential amino acids are alanine, arginine, asparagine, aspartic acid, cysteine, cystine, glutamic acid, glutamine, glycine, proline, serine and tyrosine.
Self Defense And Psychological Preparedness

Self Defense And Psychological Preparedness
by: Alexander Popov
Being psychologically prepared is critical for self defense during an assault in the street. It is very important to be ready to repel the assailant (assailants) using all the means you have. Note that even being in not very good physical shape these means could be quite sufficient to disable your enemy (enemies).
For example, if you wear hard sharp-toe shoes, then kicking your enemy in groin or shank with the toe of such shoe (even if there are no years of practice behind this kick) immediately makes him writhe with pain for several moments. And this gives you enough time to either disable the enemy or simply run away.
Scratching facer using fingernails also causes pain shock to your enemy and makes him unable to resist for some time. Remembering how dangerous a furious cat can be for people is enough to understand this.
In several cases, a furious cat is known to make its owners hide in one of the rooms and wait for the police to come and help them. Police officers in this situation often have to use guns to protect themselves and rescue the owners of the animal.
Overcoming Resistance to Exercise
September 9, 2007
Are You Destined to Sit on the Couch?
If someone mentions exercise do you think, “I hate to exercise. There’s no way I’m doing that. Exercise is hard, it’s a drag, it takes too much time.” These types of beliefs may be keeping you from discovering a fun way to add to your weight loss plan.
I’m a prime example. When I was younger I didn’t like participating in sports. I felt I was clumsy, I couldn’t throw a ball to save my life, and I’d rather not try to catch one (might hurt myself). I never felt confident about my ability on the practice field and I didn’t have a competitive spirit. I didn’t really care if I won, which tended to anger my teammates. So, if anyone talked to me about exercise I’d say, “Thanks, but no thanks, I hate sports.” But something funny happened on the way to the locker room; I discovered weight lifting. Keep your eyes and ears open and you may discover some activity you love.

Treadmill Exercise - 3 More Benefits of Treadmill Workouts
September 7, 2007
Chances are that you already know your treadmill can help you lose weight, stay fit, and protect you from the ravages of age related diseases like diabetes and heart disease.
But here are 3 MORE benefits of treadmill exercise you might NOT know!
#1 Walking on A Treadmill Helps Alleviate Depression
A recent study at Duke University found that even as little as eight minutes on a treadmill can help to dramatically, although temporarily, reduce symptoms of depression.
While researchers already knew that longer, sustained regular exercise helps to alleviate depression over the long term, this study proves that even short, vigorous workouts can have a similar helpful effect.
#2) Having Trouble Sleeping?
While it’s always been thought that vigorous exercise during the day will help improve sleep, the actual evidence to prove it hasn’t necessarily been forthcoming - until now.
Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine conducted a study that included 43 adult volunteers ages 50 to 76. All of them were sedentary and had reported moderate sleep complaints.
They were randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group was asked to exercise 30 to 40 minutes, four times a week. The other group did not change from their non-active ways.
10 Surefire Ways To Survive Eating Out
September 7, 2007
I personally lost 60 pounds in 2003. Here are some tactics I used to lose the weight:
1) Steamed instead of fried
2) Brown rice instead of white rice
3) Wheat bread instead of white bread
4) Sauce and dressing on the side. Dip your fork into the sauce first then into the food.
5) At dinner exchange the potato or other carbohydrates with extra veggies
6) No oil
7) Do not feel like you need to eat the entire meal. Plan on bringing a doggie bag home.
8) Drink two glasses of what before your meal and another 2-3 during your meal
9) No soda
10) Hold the mayo and cheese

You’ve Been Named Boss; Now What?

You’ve Been Named Boss; Now What?
by: Ramon Greenwood
Betty made a giant leap forward in her career when she landed a new position as Director of Marketing for a major division of a multi-billion dollar corporation. She would go from supervising one employee to managing 27 men and women. Her annual budget would increase dramatically. She would be expected to breathe new life into a lackluster marketing staff that had fallen behind the pace expected in the hard-driving corporation.
She came to me for advice on how to make the most of the opportunity.
Here’s the sense of what I told her.
The biggest challenge will be to think in terms of managing a function - getting things done through other people - rather than doing everything yourself. Your job is to manage the assets assigned to you so that your department’s goals are reached.
Be realistic about the reception you receive from your staff as well as your peers in management. There will be many signs of cordiality. Accept them graciously, but be aware that beneath the surface, there is another world rife with tension. You will be on trial as the organization takes your measure.
