Dieting Obstacle When Life Gets in the Way

March 31, 2008

Dieting Dilemma No 1: When Life Gets in the WayThat pesky thing called life has a way of fouling up our the best laid plans. First you decide you’re going to start keeping your car cleaner, thinking, “I’ll wash it every Saturday morning.” Great, you have a plan. Saturday comes along and someone calls inviting you to go golfing. “I was going to wash the car, but I can do it when I get back,” and off you go. Maybe you do wash the car later that day, maybe you tell yourself, “I’ll wash it next Saturday. It wasn’t that dirty anyway.”

Next week Saturday comes along and someone invited you camping so you’re in the woods thinking, “Oh, well, I can’t wash the car from here, can I?”

Another Saturday rolls around and you’ve forgotten all about your car washing plan, so even though you’re not doing anything else you’re thinking, “I don’t really FEEL like washing the car right now. I’ll do it later,” and so it goes.

“Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans.” — John Lennon

How Can your Attention be Utilized as Your Energy?

How Can your Attention be Utilized as Your Energy?
 by: Clara Szalai

Open your horizons. Find quality in small things, not the big ones. A more spiritual orientation brings about observing the details that go by unseen when you look for the big things. SHET

Can you control your attention? The ability to control your attention, to control where you focus your attention, endows you with the ability to create your environment. It furnishes you with energy to do work, study, finish projects, succeed in your endeavors when you can see both the whole picture and also the details, and in general, it enables you to react to situations with enough rationality to direct them toward your objectives. You become aware by focusing your attention on something. Before placing your attention on that something, it didn’t exist for you. Now that you focused on it, you became aware of it and it exists for you. By observing you make things alive in your own universe. And obversely, when you put less attention on something, it tends to disappear. Is your life precisely what you wish it to be? If not, no matter the reason, you can still learn to control your attention, and thereby, learn to create.

Treadmill Workout Ideas That Make Fitness Fun

March 30, 2008

Research shows that in order to lose weight safely and keep it off, you need to exercise. And even those who are not overweight benefit from an exercise or workout routine. But many people don’t exercise regularly, which puts them at risk for heart disease, accidents or injuries, and other health concerns. There are many reasons people give why they don’t exercise more. It’s boring, it’s too difficult, they don’t have enough time or they’d rather be doing other things. Some people aren’t sure how to exercise and they are uncomfortable going to a fitness center to work with a trainer. But with a good treadmill and a workout routine that fits your needs, exercise can be enjoyable, convenient and beneficial.

A treadmill is a perfect choice in exercise equipment for many people. It allows you to walk or run in the security and privacy of your own home. Unlike weightlifting or aerobics, you don’t have to use your hands or move your body across the room. Typically, it requires less concentration than other types of workouts, especially if you have a treadmill that allows you to program in a variety of workout components, such as hills, speed changes, and adjustments to maintain a target heart rate.

Is it ADHD or is it Depression?

March 28, 2008

During the assessment process it is of great importance for the physician or clinician to consider other possible causes of inattention, impulsivity, or hyperactivity in your child, or teen, or yourself. In fact, this is probably the most important element of a good assessment. There are several possible causes of these behaviors, especially in children, and the clinician must have great certainty that these other possible causes have been ruled out before giving the label of “Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder” to your child.

In this issue we will discuss the possibility that your child has depression rather than an Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, lymbic type.

When one is depressed several of the following symptoms will be noted. Someone with four or five of the following symptoms should probably see a physician or other professional to get a real assessment done.

The common symptoms of depression include: · Physical Hyperactivity, or Lack of Activity (Hypoactivity) · Change of Appetite, either Less or More · Change in Sleeping, either Less or More · Loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities · Loss of energy, increased fatigue · Feelings of worthlessness, or inappropriate guilt · Difficulty concentrating · Thoughts of death or dying · In children and teens, depression is shows itself with increased aggression, irritability, or isolation from the family.

Life Coaching and Beyond

March 27, 2008

In Corrogue the air is chill and the frost is on the ground.

On these autumn mornings the spider’s webs are glistening like each was arrayed with diamonds. The red berries of the holly stand out against the dark green of their shining leaves. It is a time simply to look and be glad at the wonder of this creativity. It is a time simply to stand and stare.

Like many people I receive unsolicited mail. This is by ordinary post and by email. Yesterday I received, via the post, a letter inviting me to train as a "Life Coach." As a writer on "being enough" I reflected on what it is to have the need for a "Life Coach."

In this “Type A” society life coaching might compound the problem of "doing more" and "being less." So I share with you what I see as the blessing of life beyond coaching. This is not to invalidate wonderful work that many dedicated individuals bring to this profession out of a sense of love and compassion.

1. You are a "being."

5-Step Weight Loss Program for Permanent Weight Loss

March 26, 2008

Every Journey Worth Taking Begins with a Single StepHere are five easy steps to gain control of your weight loss efforts. Start at the beginning, then take small steps, each and every day and you’ll climb that mountain.

STEP 1: State What You Want Now”I want to lose 50 pounds.”

Is that achievable in the next month? If not, break it down into smaller mini-goals. “I want to lose 5 pounds this month.”

What other ways can you say what you want, besides wanting to lose some weight?

“I want to step on the scale and see (state a number) pounds (remember, keep it something you can achieve in one month).

“I want to feel my pants getting looser.”

“I want to see myself in the mirror wearing last year’s bathing suit and it fits.”

“I want to notice my clothes are getting too big for me.”

“I want to easily bend over and touch my toes.”

“I want to get up from a seated position, easily and gracefully.”

Those are positive goals. Focus on what you want. How you want to feel, what you want to experience.

A Quick Introduction Into Releasing Emotions Through Visualization

A Quick Introduction Into Releasing Emotions Through Visualization
 by: Dr Edward Steiner

When Oprah Winfrey was interviewed by the legendary US television reporter Barbara Walters she was asked “what’s the reason you put yourself on the line week after week, year after year, on the cutting edge of human emotion?” Oprah replied “Teaching people to take responsibly. I believe the secret to life is to take responsibility, once people grasp that I believe everything in their life changes. Once people understand it and live it, they are at cause for their life rather than living in effect and in reaction.”

Public issues aside most people agree Bill Clinton was a very charismatic leader. Yet by his own admission in his autobiography he talks about painful acts in his childhood, anger and emotion that drove him to a better life. He hit a level of threshold where he was finally dissatisfied enough with his life to make changes. He was literally propelled forward to improve his life, and dream, and apply and learn the tools and strategies to assist himself and those around him. It’s up to us to make a decision, to release all our negative emotions, to live in the present and to move into the future with improvement. The best thing about the past is that it’s over.

Eldercare/Caregiving Stress–Managing Holidays

March 25, 2008

Caring for a chronically ill loved one can be one of life’s greatest challenges, but during holidays, when even more responsibilities are added to an already stressful schedule, caregivers can often feel guilty and frustrated for not being able to accomplish all the tasks they once did. Additionally, fond memories of past holidays, when a loved one was still healthy, can create a downward spiral with feelings of loss and sadness.

More than fifty million people, one in every five Americans, help loved ones who can no longer help themselves. But when caring for another, a caregiver often neglects their own well-being, oftentimes not even seeing themself as a caregiver, but simply as a loving family member.

STEPS CAREGIVERS CAN TAKE TO REDUCE STRESS AND ENJOY HOLIDAYS

* Take Care of You: You can’t be an effective caregiver if you are so stressed that you get sick too. As hard as it is to find the time and motivation, realize that it’s imperative that you nurture yourself.

-Eat healthy: set limits on high fat and processed foods, caffeine and too many sugar-laden treats that can increase fatigue.

-Exercise often: take a walk, stretch, lift weights, do isometrics.

Heading Off Winter Weight Gain Before it Gets Started

March 24, 2008

Must We Gain Weight Every WinterIt’s that time of year we all start thinking about putting on a healthy layer of fat, just like the hibernating bears. From a nip in the air to a massive snow and ice storm, there is a palpable difference in the air. We’ve generally accepted that it is nature’s way of helping us provide a little extra winter fat, storing up for the winter, just in case. But how long since you last had a food shortage or had to wait out the winter for your next meal?

This year can be differentToday consider making one small change. When you make a small change, it is easier to handle, you are more likely to incorporate it into your daily life and you are more likely to succeed, than if you try to make a global change to your whole way of being.

Instead of taking something away, start by adding more fresh fruit and vegetables to your diet. Just for today, throw out your rules, if you typically follow a diet that forbids fruit or fresh vegetables because fresh foods are too important to miss. Fresh foods are sweet, satisfying and full of vitamins, minerals, bioflavonoids, and other things that your body requires for optimum health.
