Dangerous Curves Ahead
by: Rhonda Hull
What is the first thing that crosses your mind when you see a road sign depicting a curvy road ahead? Fear that the road will be too difficult? Annoyed that you need to slow down and use caution? Or, do you think, “Cool! I might as well enjoy the sceneryit will be spectacular.”
Life is full of curves. Sometimes it is our own curves that inspired us to start a regular workout and take the next step in our self-care adventure. Our lives seldom travel in a smooth, straight line, and they wouldn’t be nearly as much fun if they did. So how we choose to face the curves ahead will make a big difference in the quality of our journey.
Yes, I said choose! Accompanying every circumstance is a fork in the road. It is here that we choose to travel down the Road to Reaction or the Road to Response-ability. At this point we either react as a victim of life’s twists and turns expecting more potholes or to respond to life willingly with the intention necessary to create our own happiness.
Exercise Walking For Seniors: Preventing Foot Problems
March 22, 2008
Exercise has a very important role in the general health and the quality of life of everyone, but especially in seniors. Seniors who walk tend to look younger, sleep more soundly and have fewer visits to the doctor. Walking for 30 to 60 minutes four to six days a week will help improve osteoarthritis and decrease the risk of osteoporosis, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and obesity. Walking is the top recreational sport for seniors.
Although many seniors may be scared to start an exercise program because they are worried about injury, the health benefits of exercise outweigh the risk of injury. Walking is considered one of the best forms of exercise because it’s safe, cheap and easy. Unfortunately, foot problems can prevent seniors from starting or continuing with a walking program. Follow these tips to help avoid foot problems when walking:
1. Choose the right shoe. Make sure the shoe is supportive and bends only at the toes. The shoe should also be stable from side to side. If you can twist the shoe or fold it in half, it is too flexible. The shoe should have enough wiggle room for the toes, yet be snug enough to keep the heel from slipping.
Well Being and Your Authentic Voice
March 21, 2008
In Corrogue I feel wonderful.
As friends know I love singing. I am presently singing, "I’ve got a wonderful feeling everything’s going my way." Actually this song sings me. If I were not writing I would be dancing and singing.
This is one of the great blessings of well being. It is the blessing of drinking from the well of being. In Ireland we love our wells. We are still deeply connected to the elemental relationship of water and wells. We intuitively know that wells and well being are connected. All over this enchanted land are thousands of wells that are still revered as places of healing.
These wells are still used. I see people on occasion, not far from this "place of the briars,"circumambulating the ancient well at Tuber. This is despite the fact that this well is empty. People come to this well to find well being for themselves and others. They often remain silent. It is a time of reflection and a time of humility. Often life seems out of control. Often their well of being has run dry.
Energy Is An Amazing Thing

Energy Is An Amazing Thing
by: Rhonda Hull
Surrounded by the chill of winter as we transition into a another year we begin to wonder what the New Year will hold, what surprises will be revealed, who we will become amidst all the change ahead. Fear invites us to take a bumpy path as the soft melody of our inner voice whispers that there is an easier way if we choose it.
Energy is an amazing thing. It is what defines us and holds us in our form. We send it off by doing nothing more than breathing and it’s vibration shapes everything we do. It is by the force and dynamic of our energy and how we reflect it through our attitude that we co-create who we are. It is an amazing dance that we do consciously or not. It is what shapes our personality and our life. It is how we manifest the things we say we want.
So what is it we want? It is such a hard question for women to ask, and even harder to come up with an answer. So many disappointments have caused us to shy away from knowing what we want or daring to ask for it.
Glyconutrients For You?
March 20, 2008
Simply stated, the Greek word glyco refers to “sweet.” Hence, a glyconutrient is a biochemical that contains a sugar molecule. The prefix “glyco” can be placed in front of a fat, protein or any molecule and suggests that a sugar is attached. Glycobiology is the study of the sugar portion of these proteins and fats.
Glycoprotein = Sugar attached to a protein. Glycolipid = Sugar attached to a fat. Glycoform = Any sugar form.
What exactly are Glyconutrients?
Glyconutrients are not vitamins, minerals, proteins, fats, herbs, enzymes or homeopathic drugs. They are carbohydrates. Just as there are essential proteins called amino acids and essential fats called fatty acids, glyconutrients are the newly discovered class of necessary carbohydrate nutrients.
The efficacy of glyconutrients has been established by the world’s leading scientists and researchers as the key to proper cellular communication and proper cell function. Many medical professionals and research scientists believe this medical breakthrough in glycoscience will lead to glyconutrients becoming a household word within the next three years and believe Glyconutrients will soon become mandatory for overall health. With the speculation of becoming a “staple nutritional supplement” for all 6 billion people on Earth, even business analysts believe Glyconutrients will become a household staple.
A Clean Diet For Permanent Weight Loss
March 19, 2008
Getting Started on The Clean DietIf you want to lose some weight then following a healthy eating plan is a good start, but allowing someone else to dictate exactly what, when and how much you can eat is crazy making. Guidance is good but ultimately you must learn to make better choices in your eating which leads to your gaining the ability to maintain your new shape after the weight has been lost. The Clean Diet is the answer.
What is the Clean Diet? The Clean Diet means different things to different people. My version is less strict than some because frankly I’m not a competitive body builder and I don’t have a modeling contract. Unless you must maintain a specific body weight (as actors sometimes do for instance), you probably are of the same mind as I; that being, I want to lead a basically normal life. Eating out sometimes, enjoying parties sometimes, and generally not feeling like I have to “watch what I eat” or suffer the consequences. The way I eat is sometimes called the non-dieting approach because I don’t diet, but I do pay attention. That’s what the Clean Diet means: paying attention to what you’re eating.
The Technology Behind Elliptical Cross Trainers Creates Unique Advantages and Benefits

The Technology Behind Elliptical Cross Trainers Creates Unique Advantages and Benefits
The word elliptical means shaped like an oval. In the world of fitness and exercise, elliptical technology is a relatively new, innovative equipment design that draws on a smooth, elliptical movement to provide a low impact form of weight bearing exercise that is fun and easy to learn.
Elliptical cross trainers have footpads that allow you to stand up while you exercise. They have handgrips for you to hold onto and help maintain balance. Some even have handles to use in working your upper body. Because you are standing, the exercise is similar to walking or running. But the arm bars and elliptical motion create similarities with biking or skiing. The main difference with elliptical exercise machines is that although you are standing and bearing weight, which is important to building bone density, your feet never leave the footpads. So unlike treadmills or jogging, there is little impact on your joints and muscles. This provides a low impact, total body workout.

Increase Your Training Intensity - Pre-Exhaustion
March 17, 2008
You can only build muscle tissue if you can generate progressively stronger muscular contractions, so this calls for an emphasis on finding ways to increase exercise intensity. This should not be confused with exercise duration as maximum training intensity will actually shorten the time needed to achieve maximal muscular growth.
In an earlier article I outlined the ways in which you can intensify your training. Here we’ll focus on the role that pre-exhaustion has to play in intensifying the training effect.
When an exercise employs two or more muscles it will be impossible to achieve failure for the primary muscle as the weakest muscle will give out first. This is perhaps best explained by giving an example. When targeting the chest, most exercises involve use of the triceps which is a relatively small and weak muscle. When performing the incline bench press for example, the triceps will fail before the pectorals have the opportunity to work to failure thus limiting the value of the exercise.
How do you get around this? By first performing an exercise that isolates and tires the pectorals before immediately moving on to the main exercise. For maximum benefits there should be no rest between the pre-exhaust exercise and the main compound exercise.
How To Be A Spiritual Atheist

How To Be A Spiritual Atheist
by: Steve Gillman
A spiritual atheist? Perhaps it’s a strange concept if you only think spirituality has to mean a belief in a god. Do the two have to be related? Many people think of the historical Buddha as a spiritual person, but most don’t know that he never expressed a belief in a god. He even discouraged his followers from such “speculation,” preferring that they work on their salvation in this world.
Computer Spirituality
Imagine a computer that has begun to get so complex and powerful that it starts to ask questions “outside the box.” It starts to become conscious. The first thing it would realize is that for all its computing capacity, it is still very limited. The humans who use it, most of whom can’t begin to understand it’s complicated algorithms, still are more powerful. They see the world more clearly.
The computer could recite a million facts, perhaps, and yet not know what to use them for. It could describe human psychology, and yet not understand a smile. It wouldn’t even know why it existed, or what it was being used for. If it came to understand these limitations, and to actually wonder about the world outside its circuits, and to desire to see more, and to grow - that would be computer spirituality.
Arthritis Exercise ? One Way to Relieve Pain & Stiffness in Your Joints (part 3)
March 15, 2008
There are three main types of exercises to include in a basic exercise program:
- Range-of-motion exercises - These lessen stiffness and help with improving flexibility. “Range of motion” refers to the area within which the joints move naturally or on a daily basis. Although these range-of-motion exercises can be performed every day, it is recommended that they be done at least every other day.
- Strengthening exercises ? There are two types of strengthening exercises; isometric or tightening the muscles without moving the joints, and isotonic, moving of the joints for strengthening muscle movements. It is recommended to do these sets of exercises every other day, unless you are suffering from more than mild joint pain or swelling.
- Endurance exercises ? The objective of these is to increase stamina. They also help with improving your inner personal / mental strength and with improving weight control and sleep. Some of the most popular endurance exercises are stationary bike riding, walking and water exercising. And unless you are suffering from more than mild joint pain or swelling, a 20- to 30-minute workout or two to three short 10-minute bouts during the day is what is recommended, an average of three times each week. Be kind to your body, and it will be kind to you.
