Avoid These Five Common Weight Loss Mistakes
January 31, 2009
Mistake 1: Not changing your calorie plan as you lose weight. The fallacy of the “1200 calorie diet” plans and the like.
Most people set their calorie intake at a given number and expect to keep losing weight at the same constant rate over a period of weeks. Therefore dieters look for 1000 calorie or 1800 calorie diet plans on web.
Simply put, fixed calorie diet plans don’t work. If you burn 3000 calories a day at the start of your diet, after losing weight for a week or two, you are no longer burning 3000 calories. Now you might be burning just 2800 calories.
If you maintain a constant calorie intake in the face of a decreasing calorie expenditure, your weight loss will continuously slow down as you lose weight.
If you really want to lose weight at a constant rate, you repeatedly have to:
- lower your calorie intake to accommodate the calorie expenditure drop - exercise more to increase your calorie output - do both
It’s also important to understand that you have to set realistic and slow weight loss goals. If you opt for fast weight loss, you won’t be able to sustain it for a long period unless you go to an extreme in your calorie reduction and exercise plans.
Acidity Depresses Thyriod Function
January 30, 2009
THE RISK
Accumulation of acids in your body, due to insufficient digestion of food, food allergies and consumption of acid-forming substances, can depress thyroid function. Acid-related causes of hypothyroidism also include exposure to heavy metals and toxic chemicals in the water supply and in highly processed food. When your body’s acid level rises too high, your thyroid function will be depressed and your metabolism will slow.
Lack of digestive enzymes, also caused by over-consumption of processed foods, further depresses your thyroid function. Your body’s ability to neutralize acids is further reduced. As you get older, the more toxins you’re exposed to, the more likely you will develop an under-active thyroid ? if you haven’t already.
THE DAMAGE
With a depressed thyroid function, your body’s cells and organs will not metabolize as quickly as they should. The presence of excess acid only makes the problem worse. Your cells and organs will become overrun with acid that they need to eliminate, but your depressed thyroid function will reduce their ability to deal with these acids. The acid, in turn, will perpetuate or worsen your hypothyroidism.
Treating Painful Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy
January 29, 2009
The toes burn and tingle and sharp pains shoot into your legs. The bed sheets feel uncomfortable on the feet as you toss and turn, trying to get some rest. Your feet felt numb throughout the day, but now feel like they are on fire. Nothing seems to help as you watch the hours on the clock pass by, hoping to fall asleep.
Burning, numbness, tingling, hot and cold sensations, shooting and electrical pain are common sensations felt at rest in painful peripheral neuropathy. Neuropathy is an abnormality of the nervous system. There are many different types of neuropathy, but the most common neuropathy effecting diabetics is peripheral neuropathy.
Diabetic neuropathy is described as a loss of sensation that starts in the tips of the toes and gradually works its way up the legs, and in severe case into the hands. It is sometimes referred to as a stocking glove neuropathy because it progresses as if one was pulling on a stocking.
Sixty percent of diabetics have some type of neuropathy in their feet. Five percent of diabetics will experience painful diabetic neuropathy and the incidence increases with age. Over 45% of individuals who have had diabetes for over 25 years will experience some symptoms of painful diabetic neuropathy.
Soul Purpose

Soul Purpose
by: Arthur Buchanan
This step is important, as it is one that will mold and shape the way you think about the things that are going on in this world. Your soul is a different “animal” than most of you are thinking. The soul has an agenda that is quite different from what the rest of you are about!
It is my belief that your soul is up to things that are of the common good to all of humanity and that would be considered, nice, kind, friendly, peaceful, happiness and things of that nature. Where we run into trouble is the fact that our “Will” is not always the will of our soul and that is scary.
This in turn creates problems for you as a whole, the mind can and does want to be in charge, as does the body want some action also. Please stay with me folks! These three are struggles all your life to see who is going win, but if we where smart, we would try to focus more of our time on staying in touch with our “SOUL PURPOSE.” You may say what he is talking about.
Know Your Muscle Building Exercises - The Legs
January 28, 2009
Every bodybuilder and weight trainer will have his or her favorite exercises for each body part. That’s how it should be - as you progress through the various stages of learning you’ll understand what works best for you. It is useful, however, to take stock of your progress every so often and carry out an analysis of where you are and what changes, if any, are needed to move onwards and upwards.
Part of this analysis should include an assessment of the core exercises that make up your bodybuilding training program. In this article we’ll look at the leg exercises that have proven their worth to serious bodybuilders for many years. Where appropriate a series of exercises suitable for achieving pre-exhaustion will be presented. All exercises should be performed to failure with one set of six to eight reps.
1. Leg extension - this exercise will allow you to isolate the thigh muscles preserving the strength of the other leg muscles for the compound exercise to follow.
- Push the pads until the knees are almost locked.
- Pause.
- Lower with control to the starting position.
At The Dinner Table

It was very hard having an overweight child. Wherever we were, people just stared. I often wondered if she saw what I saw. I wish I could have protected my 8 year old, Jeanine, from the eyes of this world. I wish I could have shielded her from those stares. We never really talked much about it. It was simply too painful. It is almost as if as long as we didn’t talk about it, it was not real. She pretended not to notice but I knew she saw how people reacted to her. She was a smart, perceptive child. From a very early age, she always saw things that I did not even notice. There was that time on a trip to Washington, D.C. she asked me, “Mom, why are there so many homeless people in our nation’s capital?”
I blame myself for her weight problems. We were a generally obese family and we did not practice the best eating habits. We hardly ever exercised. Even our dog was fat. From the beginning, I rewarded her with junk food for everything from getting a good grade at school to being a good girl and doing as she was told. I would wave cookies in front of her so that she would stop crying. By 3 years old, she had started manipulating me instead of the other way around!
Diversity And Unity: Embracing Our Similarities

Diversity And Unity: Embracing Our Similarities
by: Wendy Betterini
Have you ever felt uncomfortable with someone because they were different than you? Maybe they had a different ethnic background or skin color, or maybe they were “book smart” while you are more “street smart”. Maybe they dressed differently than you do, or maybe you were just repulsed by them and you’re not sure why.
I had a disturbing experience this week, in which a person was publicly ridiculing me for my spiritual beliefs. I can’t lie, it stung. We all want to be liked and accepted, and it hurts when we are rejected. I didn’t even know this person, he just took exception to me because I was different than he was. He didn’t give me a chance and try to find out if I was someone he might like to know. He assumed I was not acceptable because of one thing about me that didn’t sit well with him.
Maybe you’ve had a similar experience? Have you been rejected by someone because of your religious beliefs, skin color, body size, ethnic background or some other reason? It doesn’t feel good, does it? Over time, such experiences can make us question our own self-worth. What is really happening when a person is intolerant of another? I believe there are two dynamics playing out beneath the surface.

The Tess Syndrome
January 24, 2009
There’s a lot of talk about angels these days. They’re getting some pretty good press.
Angels are the intermediaries between God and the human race, according to every major religion in the world. Angels have always been recognized and respected as the messengers of God, bringing truth to the human race in times of trouble. The most important truth they bring is the reminder that God is part of us, and we are part of God, and we are never alone on this journey we call life.
Back in the old days, angels had to make personal appearances to small groups of people. They gave their message and disappeared into nothing. That’s the way it was, before modern technology.
Thanks to television, we have first-hand access to ‘angels’ and their heavenly messages every week. “Touched By An Angel” became a hit program the first year it aired, and its rating stayed high for the full run. The influence is infinite; through the magic of re-runs, God’s message of love for the human race gets repeated, and repeated, and repeated again. If there’s anybody left in this country who doesn’t know that God loves them, it’s because they haven’t been watching the right television shows.
Where Is All This Creation From

Where Is All This Creation From
by: Arthur Buchanan
Where is all this creation coming from? It comes from the NO-THING were God is and yes this NO-THING were creation is coming from is the mind of God. We know God has a mind because we were made in his likeness and we have a brain, so there it makes sense that the father has a brain a universal mind that controls everything.
Yet delicately balancing this thing we call free will which is God experiencing himself in both the THING and the NO-THING, and this can only been done from the creator, now the more we become like God, the more we find ourselves becoming more and more spiritual and one with the universal mind.
Now we have been given the same ability to think and to reason and when we think about that it could very well be creation. It comes from beyond this material world we live in, so we are really collaborators in creation. Once we reunite with God we will see a flash of our life go by us is a split second, know that we were all creators and then we will reunite with God and then we will walk on the streets of gold.
