Nervous System The Map

Nervous System The Map
 by: Arthur Buchanan

I bet you are saying can the nervous system be any kind of map. It is actually quite simple and complex at the same time. Let me see if I can help you understand this animal, we call the nervous system. Once we know that, the nervous system is all through out us, connected to every part of our body you will get the basis for what I am talking about.

You burn yourself, the nervous system sends a message to you part of your body to move, and it sends pain to make sure that you do move. The nervous system works that one way. It is the same for different parts of the body, you hurt your back, here comes the pain telling you had better take care of it and in a hurry, because it hurts.

Now is this the only way the nervous system works? No the system also controls your eyes and is literally in charge of all the senses and everything you do in the now here. Is there any way that it can connect us to the no where to where we come from. We all know that we are in the now here and that we are going back to the nowhere and this is where God lives.

Mindfulness and Panic: Ask Your Anxiety

November 30, 2009

Panic.

Heart racing. Palms sweating. Breathing rapid and shallow. Mouth dry. Knees knocking.

Whether it’s a pop quiz, a job interview, a spider, an impromptu speech, a crowded elevator, a dirty restroom, the view from a cliff, a shot at the clinic, a flight across the ocean, a first kiss, or a trip to a crowded shopping center, we all have something that fills us with panic. In severe cases, we can develop anxiety disorders in which panic attacks occur at seemingly random moments.

Whether you have a case of the pre-speech jitters or a full-blown panic attack, the physical symptoms are easily recognized. However, what we need to see clearly are the thoughts going through our mind whenever we feel anxious.

No matter what triggers your personal panic parade– complete with lively emotions, colorful thoughts, and sizzling sensations–there is one key element that gets the party started.

No, it’s not just stress. It isn’t your personality type. It’s not solely your past memories or the way your mother raised you or your particular physical challenges.

It is simply this: you are lacking in self-esteem.

Understanding Weight Loss

November 29, 2009

A pound of fat represents approximately 3500 calories of stored energy. In order to lose a pound of fat, you have to use 3500 more calories than you consume. Although this seems like a simple formula remember that your body is a thinking organism designed to protect itself.

If you were to try to reduce your intake by the entire 3500 calories in one day, your body would register some type of alarm and think that there is a state of emergency. Immediately your metabolism would slow down and no weight loss would be achieved.

It’s better to spread your weight loss out over a period of a week, so that you aim to reduce your caloric intake by 3500 to 7000 calories per week, resulting in weight loss of one to two pounds per week. It’s generally not recommended to try to lose more than two pounds in a week. Attempting to do so may cause health risks, and on top of this you’re unlikely to be successful.

Weight Lifting Supplement

November 28, 2009

Weight Lifting Supplement ? what is it?

The term "weight lifting supplement" is familiar to almost everyone nowadays. Weight lifting supplement is a supplement that is designed to help people who use it to achieve better results in their body building or weight lifting training programs. Currently there is a wide range of weight lifting supplement products available in the US market.

Weight Lifting Supplement ? safety.

You need to be very careful when you are looking for weight lifting supplement products for your training. There are many fake products available on the market. There are also many very dangerous supplements that may harm your health. Always consult with your doctor and other health professionals before using any of the weight lifting supplement products. Don’t just trust the labels’ claims. There is not much scientific proof for many of them.

Weight Lifting Supplement ? dangers.

Weight lifting supplement products could be very dangerous. For example, according to several health organizations’ sources, a study of androstenedione, the steroid-like food supplement used legally by professional athletes, has found it may not build muscles and could create adverse health effects. The report said muscle strength did not differ in the men given the supplement, compared to others in the study who were given a placebo.

Mindfulness and Sex: Right There, Right Now

November 27, 2009

Mindfulness is downright sexy.

After all, what’s hotter than a partner who is paying attention? Being Right There, fully in the moment, is about as perfect as it gets.

So, it comes as a bit of a surprise to me that we don’t really use the term “mindfulness” in relation to loving relationships–let alone love in the afternoon.

This should be common, mainstream, slap-your-forehead-and-say-”Duh!” kind of knowledge. I don’t pretend to be an expert on what goes on between the sheets (although I did conceive and give birth to four children within five years) but I do know this: it is absolutely completely impossible to have a truly satisfying romantic sexual moment unless you are Right There in it.

Oh, sure, it’s possible to experience physical pleasure when your mind is on something–or someone–other than that which shares your sheets. But we’re talking about meaningful, connected, one-with-the-universe kind of lovemaking, and that, my friends, calls for Mindfulness with a capital M.

It doesn’t have to be tantric. You don’t have to master every kama sutra position. It doesn’t need to be burn-the-house-down wild. You don’t even need any props or helpful devices.

Knowledge Must Be Shared

Knowledge Must Be Shared
 by: Arthur Buchanan

I am pleased to issue the first-ever Surgeon General’s Report on MentalHealth. In doing so, I am alerting the American people that mental illness is a critical public health problem that must be addressed immediately. As a society, we assign a high priority to disease prevention and health promotion; so, too, must we ensure that mental health and the prevention of mental disorders share that priority.

Mental illness is the second leading cause of disability in major market economies such as the United States, with mental disorders collectively accounting for more than 15% of all disabilities. Mental disorders–depression, schizophrenia, eating disorders, depressive (bipolar) illness, anxiety disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and Alzheimer’s disease, to name a few–are as disabling and serious as cancer and heart disease in terms of premature death and lost productivity.

Few Americans are untouched by mental illness, whether it occurs within one’s family or among neighbors, co-workers or members of the community. In fact, in any one year, one in five Americans–including children, adolescents, adults and the elderly–experience a mental disorder. Unfortunately, over half of those with severe mental illness do not seek treatment. This is mostly due to some very real barriers to access, foremost among them the stigma that people attach to mental illness and the lack of parity between insurance coverage for mental health services and other health care services.

You Are Not Your Stuff

November 25, 2009

We humans are a funny, funny breed. We spend our entire lives working and working and working to acquire ’stuff’. We buy and surround ourselves with the biggest, fanciest this or that when all the while what we really need and want is something you can’t buy anywhere. The thing we all spend our time doing is looking to experience a feeling of significance. It seems most of our actions are rooted in and motivated by our desire to either gain significance or maintain the significance we believe we’ve achieved. I believe that if you take a hard look at what motivates the majority of your actions you’ll begin to see that this is true. You want to feel like you count. You want it to matter that you’re around.

Here’s some news… You are not your stuff. Stuff doesn’t make you significant. You’re not any bigger because you have a big house. You’re no more significant because your car is fancier than your neighbors. Oh sure, these things may help you feel better for a while, but over time the illusion is broken down.

Weight Training for Weight Loss

November 25, 2009

Weight training combines building muscle tone and working the cardiovascular system. Weight training tones your muscles and raises your metabolism, which helps your body burn more calories not only when exercising, but also while you sleep.

Weight training reverses the natural decline in your metabolism, which begins around age 30 therefore this is something to think about for all those who have reached that age.

Working with weights can produce a great deal of energy, and a full workout works almost all of the 650 muscles in your body. Looking toward long-term benefits, weight training strengthens bones, which can reduce your risk of developing osteoporosis. This of course is of very big concern amongst women, since osteoporosis afflicts women much more than men.

Many women worry that weight training will make them muscular and bulky like a man but you must keep in mind that men and women have different muscular structures, therefore weight training will not develop big muscles on women, just toned muscles.

Not only is weight training a routine that makes you strong, it is a routine that trains the body to build muscle instead of fat, takes stress off key areas of the body such as the lower back, making you less prone to injury in that area.

People with Serious Mental Illnesses in Jail and Prison

People with Serious Mental Illnesses in Jail and Prison
 by: Arthur Buchanan

Their Stories

People with mental illnesses often come into contact with the criminal justice system.

• Steven, 28, has bipolar disorder. He can maintain a normal family life and a job as a landscaper. He had never had problems with the law or any history of violent behavior. One night while he was driving, the police pulled him over. He heard voices telling him to keep going. He did, was shot in the hand, bitten by police dogs and arrested. He spent four months in jail, without the medication that had kept him stable. Eventually, he was found not guilty by reason of insanity and was hospitalized; the charges were dismissed. (Health Foundation of Greater Cincinnati , 8/00)

A man with a mental illness who was homeless was arrested in Florida for shoplifting an ice-cream sandwich that cost $ 1.16, then imprisoned because he lacked the $25 bail for release. (Sun-Sentinel, Ft. Lauderdale , 11/98)

Many lack access to adequate services through the public mental health system.

The Profect Solution for Diabetics

November 23, 2009

Diabetes, which affects more than 6% of the US population or over 18,000,000 people [i], is diagnosed when the body is not creating or effectively utilizing the hormone called insulin. As a result, much-needed energy from sugar, starch, and other sources are not being exploited as effectively as they should. This can lead to severe adverse health consequences, including nerve, ocular, and kidney problems [ii].

While genetics and environmental factors play a role, the exact cause of diabetes is as yet undetermined. However, one thing is precisely clear to those with this condition: eating right is vitally important.

Generally speaking, people with diabetes do not eat a standard "one size fits all" diet. Rather, they must adhere very closely to the healthy eating guidelines prescribed by their doctor.

However, these recommendations, which generally apply to the general public as well [iii], include principles such as eating a low-fat diet, and limiting calories from saturated fat to less than 10% of daily caloric intake. The recommendations also include eating complete sources of protein, and limiting calories from protein to 20% of daily caloric intake [iv]. It is worth noting that protein also plays an added support role in a diabetic diet, because protein can slowly transforms into glucose. As such, ingesting appropriate amounts of complete protein can help a diabetic manage blood-sugar levels.
